Not The Supermarket Challenge

Once a year we do a supermarket challenge where 4 supermarkets recommend their wines and we put them to the taste test. This year we have decided to change the format slightly. We will have two categories – wine priced under £10 and wine priced over £10 but instead of the supermarkets choosing the wine, the committee will be using all of their experience of years and years of dedication to this subject to pick the wines they like and hopefully you will enjoy. 12 ‘superb’ wines for you to taste and score. The cost of this tasting is £14 for members and £16 for non members and guests.
If you would like to join us for this fabulous taste testing evening please contact Eddy on 01673 861308 to reserve your place by 12th June.

We hope to see you there.x
Please note the tasting will be in the Hardy Building as usual. There is no welcome wine at 7.30pm and tasting will commence at 8pm

Fine Bordeaux

Bordeaux must be one of the world’s most famous wines but we all know that it can vary in quality by a huge margin. Do you go for the famous names with the associated famous prices (which doesn’t necessarily mean good value or that you will like it) or do you look for a bargain and be disappointed? Well we may have found the answer. A couple of years ago Anthony Stocksbridge gave us a Chablis tasting which was well received and so we have invited him back for a FINE Bordeaux tasting. Anthony is from Cambridge and he has been given the task of finding a selection of wines with an average bottle price of £24 so we can expect wines that most of us do not drink every day!

Fancy joining us ……

Please book your place at this tasting by 15th May by contacting Paul Daubney on 01673 861147

The cost of this tasting is £20 for members and £24 for non members and guests.

Chilean white and Argentinian red by Chris Mooney

Chris is making a very welcome return. He previously did a Guigal presentation for us some time ago. As he represents Fells and Co. a leading wine importer founded in 1858 and owned by Symington Family Estates, owners of the well known port houses, he knows a thing or two about quality wines and I bet that he will not be bringing cheap South American wines found in abundance in supermarkets. His budget is set much, MUCH higher !! Both Chile and Argentina can make some very good quality wine – we should see some on this tasting so come along and join us.
Members £16 and non members and guests £19.
Contact Eddy on 01673 861308 to reserve your place by 17th April

There is nothing like being well prepared…..

Thursday 20th October 2016

This month we will be welcoming Jane Sowter presenting wines from Chateau Musar –  Lebanon.  This is an award winning family business that have been making wines since 1930 although vines have actually been cultivated in Lebanon’s high altitude valley for over 6000 years.  Jane has been presenting Chateau Musar for over 18 years and so certainly knows a thing or two about the wine! All the grapes at Chateau Musar are hand-harvested by local Bedouins between August and October.  In the winery, ambient yeasts do the work of fermentation. The bare minimum of sulphur is used and the Chateau Musar wines are neither fined nor filtered.
Chateau Musar also produces L’Arack de Musar, Lebanon’s purest aniseed-flavoured spirit.

This promises to be a great evening with some very interesting wines most of you may never have had the pleasure of tasting yet so why not come along and do just that!

The cost is £16 to members and £18 to non members.  Contact Eddy Murfin to book your place by no later than 17th October. 01673 861308 or

Thursday  21st July

It’s all about Champagne!!

This tasting is being presented by Henry Speer.  Henry is a longstanding member of the Society and once worked in the Champagne business so he certainly knows his stuff!!  Henry presented a Champagne evening for us back in 2014 which was our best attended tasting of the year!  The evening was both enjoyable and informative. You can never have too much of a good thing and so, whilst we can still afford to drink European wines, we’ve invited Henry back to present to us again.  Some shrewd purchasing has enabled Henry to present to us a good selection of champagne’s at an excellent price, mixing some lesser known champagne houses with the likes of Veuve Clicquot and Bollinger.  So if you’re tired of starting every day with a glass of Moet & Chandon, here is your chance to try something new!

The cost to you for this tasting is £16 for members and £18 for non-members and guests.  To reserve your place please contact Eddy on 01673 861308 or email by 18th July.  We hope to see you there.

Thursday  16th June

Rieslings around the world.

Ben Straw ( based in Lincoln will be hosting this evening’s tasting of Rieslings from around the world. Ben is a WSET educator and is one of only 8000 people worldwide to hold a WSET Level 4 diploma in Wines and Spirits. Ben has presented to the Wine Society on previous occasions with Italian wines and wines from Alsace. These tastings were given favourable comments by both members and guests and so we are sure to have another great evening with quality wines. If you like Riesling and would like the opportunity to try it’s worldly variations, or if you are unsure if this grape is to your liking but hope to find a country that provides the one for you then this is the tasting to attend! Please contact Eddy Murfin on 01673 861308 or email to reserve your place by 13th June. The cost of this evening is £15 each for members and £17 each for non members and guests. We hope to see you there.
